In September 2014, Al-Jazeera published an article on slavery in Yemen. The investigation concluded that slavery was an evidenced widespread phenomenon in the country.
The Yemen Times recently published an article entitled "Modern and Traditional Slavery still exist in Yemen". The author recalls that Article 248 of the Yemeni penal code stipulates that anyone involved in the buying, selling or owning of human beings can be imprisoned for up to ten years.
In 2012, the Wethaq Foundation, a Yemen based NGO, estimated there were at least 190 slaves in Hajja, and found evidence of 13 slaves being traded there in recent history.
